Ghazal 441: How would it be if the heart of that moon were kind?

How would it be if the heart of that moon were kind?
For our state would not be like this, if it were so.

I would tell you what the breeze of the friend's forelock is worth,
if I had a thousand lives for every tip of a hair.

O Lord, how would the warrant of our happiness be the less
if it carried the sign of safety from the evil of the age?

If time had held me high and dear,
the throne of my honour would be the dust of that threshold.

Would that he came out from behind the veil like a teardrop,
so that his command might run over our two eyes.

If the circle of love had not closed the way,
the bewildered Hafez would be, like the point, at the centre.

Interpretation of the fal

You wish the one you love were kinder to you: your state depends on their affection. Your happiness is incomplete because you are not sure of its future. You would pay any price for them, but the road to them is still closed. For now there is nothing for it but patience and hope: ask them to show themselves.
