Ghazal 447: Come, do not go on bearing this grudge against us

Come, do not go on bearing this grudge against us,
for you owe the rights of an old companionship.

Listen to advice, for this pearl is far better
than the jewel you keep in your treasury.

But when will you show your face to the rends,
you who have the sun and moon to hold your mirror?

Do not speak ill of the rends, O shaykh, and take care,
for it is against the decree of God that you bear a grudge.

Are you not afraid of my fiery sigh?
You know that the cloak you wear is of wool.

Come to the help of the penniless with their aching heads,
for God's sake, if you have any of last night's wine.

I have seen nothing sweeter than your verse, Hafez,
by the Koran that you hold in your breast.

Interpretation of the fal

A coolness has come between you and an old friend: put the grudge aside and keep the rights of companionship. The advice you are hearing is more useful to you than any wealth. Do not judge others harshly, since each person's state is by God's will. Help those who are in need. Your words and your skill come from the heart and have real worth.
