Ghazal 450: For a long time now you have kept us anxious

For a long time now you have kept us anxious;
you do not treat those who are sincere as you treat others.

Not one corner of an approving eye has opened towards me;
is this how you honour those who have insight?

Better to cover your forearm, since for the sake of colouring it
you keep your hand in the blood of the hearts of the gifted.

Neither the rose nor the nightingale in the garden escaped grief for you;
you keep them all crying out and tearing their clothes.

O you who look for the coin of presence in the patched cloak,
how strange that you expect an eye for the secret from the unaware.

Since you are the narcissus of the garden of sight, O eye and lamp,
why do you hold your head so aloof from me, whose heart is worn?

The jewel of the cup of Jamshid comes from the mine of another world;
you are asking for it from the clay of the potters.

You are the father of experience, O heart; so on what ground
do you expect love and faithfulness from these boys?

Your purse of silver and gold will have to be emptied clean,
with such hopes as you place in those of silver body.

Though the libertine life and ruin are our sin, yet
a lover said that it is you who keep your servant to it.

Do not spend the day of well-being in reproach, Hafez;
what do you expect from a world that is passing?

Interpretation of the fal

For some time you have been hurt by the indifference of someone who treats others better than you. But what you seek is not in the place where you are looking: do not expect understanding from the unaware. You have experience, so do not look for faithfulness from the faithless. This road is costly for you. Do not waste days of well-being on complaint and reproach.
