Ghazal 454: From the lane of the friend comes the breeze of the New Year wind

From the lane of the friend comes the breeze of the New Year wind;
if you ask help of this wind, you will light the lamp of the heart.

If, like the rose, you have a little coin, for God's sake spend it on pleasure,
for the passion for hoarding gold led Korah into many errors.

From the cup of the rose the nightingale is again so drunk on ruby wine
that it has sent up to the turquoise sky the call of the throne of victory.

Go out to the open plain, to shake the dust of grief from your skirt;
come to the rose garden, to learn from the nightingale how to make verse.

Since, O heart, there is no staying for ever in this turquoise hall,
count the chance of pleasure as gain, with good fortune and good days.

What is the way to have one's wishes granted? To give up one's own wish;
the cap of sovereignty is the one you stitch out of this renunciation.

I speak behind a veil: come out of the bud like the rose,
for the rule of the lord of the New Year lasts no more than five days.

I do not know what the turtledove's lament by the streams is about;
perhaps it too, like me, has a grief that lasts night and day.

I have a wine as clear as the soul, and the Sufi finds fault with it;
O God, may no man of sense have bad luck for his portion.

Your sweet friend has gone; now sit alone, O candle,
for this is the decree of the sky, whether you bear it or burn.

One cannot, out of pride in learning, be shut out from the means of joy;
come, cupbearer, for the ignorant man gets his daily bread more easily.

Drink wine in the vizier's gathering at the Jalali New Year,
so that the draught from your cup gives the world its New Year dress.

It is not Hafez alone who prays for Khwaja Turanshah;
from the praise of the vizier the world asks its feast-day gift.

His court is, for the pious, the prayer niche of heart and eye;
his brow is, for those who rise at dawn, the day of conquest and victory.

Interpretation of the fal

The New Year breeze is blowing: a fresh season is beginning, and your heart will be lit. Spend what you have on gladness and do not hoard. Go out and put grief away from you. The opportunity is short: come out of your shell. To attain what you want, let go of your own wanting. If a friend has left, accept it. Good will come to you from a generous person of standing.
