Ghazal 458: O heart, at the moment when you are ruined by rose-red wine
O heart, at the moment when you are ruined by rose-red wine,
without gold or treasure you have a hundred times the pomp of Korah.
In the place where they give the seat of honour to the poor,
I expect that you will stand above all others in rank.
On the road to the dwelling of Layla, where there are dangers,
the condition of the first step is that you be Majnun.
I have shown you the point of love: take care, make no mistake,
or else, when you look, you will be outside the circle.
The caravan has gone, and you are asleep, with the desert ahead;
when will you set out? Whom will you ask the way? What will you do? How will you fare?
If you seek a king's crown, show a jewel of your own nature,
even if you are of the seed of Jamshid and Fereydun.
Drink a cup and fling the last drops at the heavens;
how long, how long, will your heart bleed for the grief of the days?
Hafez, do not lament your poverty, for if this is your verse,
no one of glad heart would approve of your being sad.
Interpretation of the fal
True wealth lies in a glad heart, not in possessions. On the road you want to take, the first condition is to have given your heart completely. Others have gone and you are still delaying: get up and ask the way. Greatness lies in your own substance, not in lineage. Put the grief of the times aside. With the gift you have, there is no room for sorrow over being poor.
