Ghazal 463: The peace of God, for as long as the nights return
The peace of God, for as long as the nights return
and the strings of the lute answer one another,
be upon the valley of Arak and those who dwell there,
and upon the house at the bend of the dunes above the sands.
I am one who prays for the strangers of the world,
and I pray without break and without end.
Whatever halting place he turns to, O God,
keep him in Your everlasting kindness.
Do not complain, O heart, for in the chain of his tress
a disordered state is itself all composure.
From the line of your down a hundred more beauties have been added;
may your life be a hundred Jalali years.
It is you who must be there; otherwise it is a small thing
to lose the capital of rank and wealth.
Praise be to that painter of power
who draws the line of the crescent around the moon.
For love of you is my rest at every hour,
and the thought of you my companion in every state.
May the dark core of my heart, until the resurrection,
never be empty of longing and passion for you.
Where should I find union with a king like you,
I, a careless rend of bad name?
God knows what it is that Hafez wants,
and God's knowing is enough for me, without my asking.
Interpretation of the fal
You are praying for someone far away and asking God to keep them safe: your prayer goes with them. Do not complain of a troubled heart: there is a calm within that very trouble. Their existence matters more to you than any rank or wealth. You do not think yourself worthy of them, but God knows your heart and there is no need to say much.
