Ghazal 466: This cloak that I have is better in pawn for wine

This cloak that I have is better in pawn for wine,
and this meaningless notebook is better drowned in pure wine.

Since I have wasted my life, as far as I have looked into it,
it is better to lie ruined in a corner of a tavern.

Since prudent calculation is far from the dervish way,
it is better to have both a breast full of fire and an eye full of water.

I will not tell people about the state of the ascetic;
if I tell this story, it is better told to harp and rebec.

As long as the affairs of the sky go on like this, without head or foot,
it is better to have desire for the cupbearer in one's head and wine in one's hand.

I will not take my heart from a beloved like you; no,
if I must endure a twist, it is better from that twisting tress.

Since you have grown old, Hafez, come out of the tavern;
the libertine life and its desires are better in the time of youth.

Interpretation of the fal

Put show and pretension aside and be honest with yourself: that is better than any covering. If you feel your life has been wasted, at least spend the rest of it without hypocrisy. Too much calculation does not go with the way of the heart. Do not speak of other people's faults. Stay faithful to your love, but know that everything has its season and should suit your age and condition.
