Ghazal 473: Count time as gain, as far as you are able
Count time as gain, as far as you are able;
the harvest of life, dear soul, is this moment, if you would know it.
The sky grants wishes only at the price of life;
strive to take from fortune your due of pleasure.
Gardener, when I pass on from this place, may it be forbidden to you
to plant any cypress in my stead but the friend.
The taste of wine will kill the ascetic who has repented;
O man of sense, do not do a thing that brings regret.
The censor does not know this much: that the Sufi keeps
home-made goods as red as the pomegranate ruby.
Do not strive against the prayer of those who rise at night, O sugar-mouthed;
the seal of Solomon is under the protection of a single Name.
Listen to the advice of lovers and come back in by the door of joy,
for the business of this passing world is not worth all this.
My dear Joseph is gone; brothers, have pity,
for I see how strange the state of the old man of Canaan is from grief for him.
Do not speak of the libertine life before the ascetic, for one cannot
tell a hidden pain to a physician who is not in one's confidence.
You pass by and your eyelashes shed the people's blood;
you go so fast, my dear, that I fear you will stumble.
I guarded my heart against the arrow of your eye, but
your eyebrow, the archer, carries it off by sheer boldness.
Gather the scattered Hafez together with one kindness,
O you, the curl of whose hair is the gathering place of all that is scattered.
If you are indifferent to us, O beauty with a heart of stone,
I will tell my state before the second Asaf.
Interpretation of the fal
Value your time: the harvest of life is this very moment. Do nothing that will bring regret. Do not set yourself against the prayers of those who keep vigil at night. Someone dear has gone far from you and the grief is heavy. Do not share your pain with anyone who is not in your confidence. Ask the one you love for a little attention, and if they stay indifferent, take your case to a person of standing.
