Ghazal 48: The Sufi learned the hidden secret from the gleam of wine
The Sufi learned the hidden secret from the gleam of wine;
by this ruby you can tell the true quality of anyone.
Only the bird of dawn knows the worth of the rose's collected pages,
for not everyone who has read a leaf has grasped the meanings.
I offered both worlds to my heart, which had seen much;
apart from love of you it judged everything else to be passing.
The time is gone when I worried about the common crowd;
the morals officer too has learned of this secret pleasure.
The heart-stealer did not think our ease suited the moment,
otherwise she knew of the anxiety on our side.
He turns stone and clay to ruby and carnelian by the blessing of his gaze,
whoever knew the worth of the breath of the wind from Yemen.
You who learn the verse of love from the book of reason,
I fear you will not truly come to know this point.
Bring wine, for he does not pride himself on the rose of the world's garden,
whoever has known the plundering of the autumn wind.
This strung pearl that Hafez drew out of his nature
he knew to be the result of the patronage of the second Asaf.
Interpretation of the fal
The truth of the matter, and the real nature of the people involved, will soon be clear to you. Do not be satisfied with appearances or surface knowledge: this road is travelled with the heart, not by logic alone. Do not fear what people say. Worldly pleasures pass, so do not pride yourself on them. With the attention of a generous patron, your work will gain value.
