Ghazal 487: O you who know nothing, strive to become one who knows

ای بی‌خبر بکوش که صاحب‌خبر شوی
تا راهرو نباشی کی راهبر شوی؟

در مکتب حقایق پیش ادیب عشق
هان ای پسر بکوش که روزی پدر شوی

دست از مس وجود چو مردان ره بشوی
تا کیمیای عشق بیابی و زر شوی

خواب و خورت ز مرتبهٔ خویش دور کرد
آن گه رسی به خویش که بی خواب و خور شوی

گر نور عشق حق به دل و جانت اوفتد
بالله کز آفتاب فلک خوب‌تر شوی

یک دم غریق بحر خدا شو گمان مبر
کز آب هفت بحر به یک موی تر شوی

از پای تا سرت همه نور خدا شود
در راه ذوالجلال چو بی پا و سر شوی

وجه خدا اگر شودت منظر نظر
زین پس شکی نماند که صاحب‌نظر شوی

بنیاد هستی تو چو زیر و زبر شود
در دل مدار هیچ که زیر و زبر شوی

گر در سرت هوای وصال است حافظا
باید که خاک درگه اهل هنر شوی

O you who know nothing, strive to become one who knows;
until you have been a wayfarer, how will you become a guide?

In the school of truths, before the tutor of love,
take heed, my son, and strive, that one day you may be a father.

Wash your hands of the copper of existence, like the men of the road,
so that you may find the elixir of love and turn to gold.

Sleeping and eating have kept you far from your own true rank;
you will come to yourself when you are without sleeping and eating.

If the light of the love of God falls upon your heart and soul,
by God, you will become fairer than the sun in the sky.

Be drowned for one moment in the sea of God, and do not suppose
that the water of the seven seas will wet a single hair of you.

From foot to head you will become all the light of God,
when on the road of the Lord of Majesty you are without foot or head.

If the face of God becomes the object of your sight,
no doubt remains that from then on you will be one who sees.

When the foundation of your being is turned upside down,
have no thought in your heart that you yourself will be overturned.

If the desire for union is in your head, Hafez,
you must become the dust at the door of those who have virtue.
