Ghazal 493: O king of the beautiful, save me from the grief of loneliness
O king of the beautiful, save me from the grief of loneliness;
without you my heart is at its last breath: it is time you came back.
The rose of this garden does not stay fresh for ever;
come to the help of the weak while you have the power.
Last night I was complaining of his tress to the wind;
it said: "You are mistaken: let go of this melancholy thought."
A hundred east winds are dancing here in chains;
this is your adversary, O heart: do not try to measure the wind.
Longing and separation, far from you, have brought me so low
that the last footing of patience will slip from my hand.
O Lord, to whom can one tell this point: that in all the world
that beauty who is everywhere has shown his face to no one?
Cupbearer, the meadow of roses has no colour without your face;
set your boxwood figure swaying, and you will adorn the garden.
O you, pain for whom is my cure on the bed of disappointment,
and thought of whom is my companion in the corner of loneliness.
In the circle of what is allotted, we are the point of surrender;
kindness is whatever you intend, and the decree is whatever you command.
In the world of the rends there is no thinking of self or judging by self;
in this creed, self-regard and self-opinion are unbelief.
My heart bleeds because of this enamelled circle of the sky: give me wine,
that I may solve this difficulty in an enamelled cup.
Hafez, the night of separation is over, the sweet scent of union has come;
may your gladness be blessed, O distracted lover.
Interpretation of the fal
Good news: the night of separation is over and the scent of union is coming. Loneliness has worn you out, and it is time for the one you love to return. On this road put self-opinion and self-regard aside, and be content with what comes. Ask them to care for the weak while they have the power. May your gladness be blessed: your patience is bearing fruit.
