Ghazal 5: My heart is slipping from my hand; you who have hearts, for God's sake help!

My heart is slipping from my hand; you who have hearts, for God's sake help!
Alas, the hidden secret will be laid bare.

We are shipwrecked; rise, O favourable wind,
that we may see the face of the friend again.

The ten-day kindness of the turning sky is tale and sorcery;
count it a chance, friend, to do good to your friends.

In the circle of rose and wine the nightingale sang sweetly last night:
bring the morning cup; awake, O drunken ones!

O man of generosity, in thanks for your own well-being
ask one day after the destitute dervish.

The comfort of both worlds is the meaning of these two sayings:
with friends, generosity; with enemies, forbearance.

They gave us no passage into the street of good repute;
if you do not approve, then change destiny.

That bitter one the Sufi called the mother of all evils
is sweeter and more desirable to us than a maiden's kiss.

In the time of poverty, strive for joy and drunkenness,
for this elixir of being makes a Korah of a beggar.

Do not be headstrong, for you would burn like a candle from the jealousy
of the beloved in whose hand hard granite turns to wax.

The mirror of Alexander is the cup of wine; look,
and it will show you the state of Darius's kingdom.

The Persian-speaking beauties are givers of life;
cupbearer, bring the good news to the pious rends.

Hafez did not put on this wine-stained cloak by his own choice;
O sheikh of the spotless robe, hold us excused.

Interpretation of the fal

You carry a secret you fear will come out, and you feel like someone shipwrecked. Take hope: a favourable wind is coming and you will see your friend again. Time is short, so be generous with friends and patient with opponents. Keep your spirits up even in a lean season, avoid stubbornness, and the way will open.
