Ghazal 53: I am one for whom the corner of the tavern is the dervish lodge
I am one for whom the corner of the tavern is the dervish lodge;
a prayer for the Magian elder is my litany at dawn.
If I do not have the tune of the harp at the morning cup, what of it?
My music at daybreak is a sigh that asks for pardon.
I am free of king and beggar, praise be to God;
the beggar in the dust of the friend's door is my king.
My aim in mosque and tavern is union with you;
I have no thought but this, and God is my witness.
Only by the sword of death will I strike my tent; otherwise,
to shy away from the door of fortune is not my way.
Since the moment I laid my face on this threshold,
the top of the sun's throne has been my resting place.
Though the sin was not of our choosing, Hafez,
keep to the path of courtesy and say: the sin is mine.
Interpretation of the fal
You have found your path and do not envy anyone's wealth or rank; that independence is your real capital. Your intention is clean and your goal is clear. Do not turn away from the door you have set your heart on, because your fortune lies there. If something goes wrong, make no excuses and own it with humility.
