Ghazal 54: From weeping, the pupil of my eye is seated in blood
From weeping, the pupil of my eye is seated in blood;
see what state people are in for seeking you.
In memory of your ruby lip and your drunken, wine-coloured eye,
the ruby wine I drink from the cup of grief is blood.
If from the east at the end of your street the sun of your face
should rise, my fortune would be blessed.
The tale of Shirin's lip is the speech of Farhad;
the curl of Layla's tress is the dwelling of Majnun.
Seek my heart, for your stature is as pleasing as the cypress;
speak, for your speech is graceful and measured.
With the round of the wine bring ease to my soul, cupbearer,
for the pain of my mind comes from the cruelty of the turning sky.
Since the moment that dear child went from my sight,
the hem of my skirt has been like the river Oxus.
How can my grieving heart be made glad
by choice, when it is beyond choice?
Out of his senses, Hafez goes seeking the friend,
like a pauper who is after the treasure of Korah.
Interpretation of the fal
You have wept a great deal over someone dear who is far away, and your heart is not under your own control. You have set your mind on something large that will not be easy to reach. If that person turns toward you, your luck will rise; until then, lighten your heart with good company and conversation, and do not blame yourself for a sorrow you cannot choose away.
