Ghazal 59: I hope for a kindness from the friend's court

I hope for a kindness from the friend's court;
I have committed a crime, and my hope is in his pardon.

I know he will overlook my offence, for he,
though fairy-faced, has the nature of an angel.

We wept so much that everyone who passed by,
seeing our tears flowing, said: what stream is this?

That mouth is nothing, and I see no trace of it;
that waist is a hair, and I do not know what hair it is.

I marvel at the picture of his image, how it has not gone
from my eye, which is busy washing moment by moment.

Without a word your tress keeps drawing the heart;
with your heart-drawing tress, who has any face to argue?

It is a lifetime since I caught a scent from your tress;
from that scent a fragrance still lingers in the sense of my heart.

Hafez, your distracted state is bad, but
to be distracted by the scent of the friend's tress is good.

Interpretation of the fal

You have made a mistake and it is weighing on you. Take hope: the person you fear has a generous, kind nature and will overlook your slip. Offer your apology honestly, without excuses. Your present distress comes from love, and it will end well.
