Ghazal 64: Though to display one's skill before the friend is bad manners

Though to display one's skill before the friend is bad manners,
the tongue is silent, yet the mouth is full of Arabic.

The fairy hides her face and the demon flirts with beauty;
my eyes burned with wonder at what a marvel this is.

In this meadow no one has picked a rose without a thorn; yes,
the lamp of Mustafa goes with the spark of Abu Lahab.

Do not ask why the wheel of heaven fosters the base,
for its granting of wishes has no cause as its pretext.

I would not buy the arch of lodge and hospice for half a barleycorn,
I for whom the tavern bench is a palace and the foot of the jar a hall.

The beauty of the daughter of the vine is surely the light of our eyes,
for she is in a veil of glass and a curtain of grape.

I had a thousand measures of reason and manners, sir;
now that I am ruined with drink, the right course is to have none.

Bring wine, for like Hafez I have a thousand supports
in weeping at dawn and pleading at midnight.

Interpretation of the fal

The world looks upside down: the worthy are hidden and the unworthy are on show. Do not be shocked by this unfairness or ask the reason for it; no good here comes without something bad beside it. Do not set your heart on rank or appearances, and do not show off your abilities. Your real support is prayer and humility; lean on that.
