Ghazal 71: The ascetic who worships appearances knows nothing of our state

The ascetic who worships appearances knows nothing of our state;
whatever he says about us is no cause for offence.

On the path, whatever comes before the wayfarer is his good;
on the straight road, O heart, no one is lost.

Let us see what game shows its face; we will push a pawn.
On the chessboard of the rends there is no room for the king.

What is this high ceiling, plain yet full of patterns?
No wise man in the world knows the answer to this riddle.

What self-sufficiency is this, Lord, what mighty wisdom,
that there are so many hidden wounds and no room for a sigh?

It seems the master of our chancery does not know the accounts,
for on this seal there is no sign of 'for God's sake'.

Whoever wishes, say: come; whatever he wishes, say: speak.
At this court there is no pride, no disdain, no chamberlain, no doorkeeper.

To go to the tavern door is the work of the single-coloured;
those who sell themselves have no way into the wine sellers' street.

Whatever is wrong comes from our own ill-fitting, shapeless figure;
otherwise your robe of honour is short on no one's stature.

I am the servant of the elder of the tavern, whose kindness is constant;
the kindness of sheikh and ascetic is sometimes there and sometimes not.

If Hafez does not sit in the seat of honour, it is from high-mindedness;
the dregs-drinking lover is not bound to wealth and rank.

Interpretation of the fal

Do not be hurt by the judgement of people who see only the surface; they know nothing of your real state. Whatever happens on this path is for your good, and you are not lost. Look for the shortcoming in yourself, not in God's grace, which reaches everyone. The door of mercy has no doorkeeper: go forward sincere and unassuming, and do not think about rank.
