Ghazal 78: You saw that the friend had nothing in mind but cruelty and oppression

دیدی که یار، جز سر جور و ستم نداشت
بشکست عهد، وز غم ما، هیچ غم نداشت

یا رب مگیرش ارچه دل چون کبوترم
افکند و کشت و عزت صید حرم نداشت

بر من، جفا ز بخت من آمد وگرنه یار
حاشا که رسم لطف و طریق کرم نداشت

با این همه، هر آن‌که نه خواری کشید از او
هر جا که رفت، هیچ کسش محترم نداشت

ساقی بیار باده و با محتسب بگو
انکار ما مکن که چنین جام، جم نداشت

هر راهرو که ره به حریم درش نبرد
مسکین برید وادی و ره در حرم نداشت

«حافظ»! ببر تو گوی فصاحت که مدعی
هیچش هنر نبود و خبر نیز هم نداشت

You saw that the friend had nothing in mind but cruelty and oppression;
he broke the covenant and felt no grief for our grief.

Lord, do not hold it against him, though my dove-like heart
he struck down and killed, and did not honour the game of the sanctuary.

The cruelty came to me from my own fortune; otherwise the friend,
God forbid, was not without the habit of kindness and the way of generosity.

For all that, whoever did not suffer humiliation from him
was held in respect by no one, wherever he went.

Cupbearer, bring wine, and say to the morals officer:
do not deny us, for Jamshid himself had no such cup.

Every traveller who did not find the way to the sanctuary of his door
crossed the desert, poor man, and had no way into the shrine.

Hafez, carry off the ball of eloquence, for the pretender
had no skill at all and no knowledge either.
