Ghazal 7: Come, Sufi, for the cup is a clear mirror
Come, Sufi, for the cup is a clear mirror;
look, and see the purity of the ruby-coloured wine.
Ask the drunken rends for the secret behind the veil,
for this state is not given to the high-ranking ascetic.
The phoenix is no one's prey; gather up your net,
for there the snare holds nothing but wind.
At the feast of time drink a cup or two and go;
do not hope for a union that lasts for ever.
O heart, youth has gone and you picked no rose of joy;
now in old age do something worthy of name and honour.
Take your pleasure in the present, for when the water ran out
Adam left the garden of the abode of peace.
We have many claims of service at your threshold;
master, look again with pity on your slave.
Hafez is a disciple of the cup of wine; go, morning breeze,
and carry this servant's homage to the Sheikh of Jam.
Interpretation of the fal
Stop chasing what cannot be caught and gather in your net; what you already hold is worth more. Use today's chance, and do not expect any happiness to be permanent. Look at the matter with a clear heart and you will see the truth of it. Your past efforts will be recognised.
