Ghazal 80: Do not find fault with the rends, O ascetic of pure nature
Do not find fault with the rends, O ascetic of pure nature,
for the sins of others will not be written against you.
Whether I am good or bad, go and mind yourself;
in the end everyone reaps what he has sown.
Everyone is seeking the friend, sober or drunk;
everywhere is the house of love, mosque or fire temple.
My head in submission, and the brick at the tavern door;
if the pretender does not understand, say: head and brick.
Do not make me despair of the grace that was there before time;
behind the veil, how do you know who is fair and who is foul?
I am not the only one who fell out from behind the veil of piety;
my father too let eternal paradise slip from his hand.
Hafez, if on the day of death you have a cup in hand,
they will carry you straight from the tavern street to paradise.
Interpretation of the fal
Attend to your own affairs and avoid finding fault with others; each person will see the result of their own actions. Everyone, in their own way, is seeking the same truth. If you have done wrong, do not despair of mercy: no one knows another's heart or how things will end. Be humble and leave judgement to God.
