Ghazal 91: O you who are absent from my sight, I entrust you to God

O you who are absent from my sight, I entrust you to God;
you have burned my soul, and with my heart I love you.

Until I drag the hem of my shroud under the foot of the earth,
do not believe I will let go the hem of your robe.

Show me the prayer niche of your eyebrow, that at dawn
I may raise my hands in prayer and put them round your neck.

If I must go to Harut of Babylon,
I will work a hundred kinds of magic to bring you back.

I want to die before you, O faithless physician;
ask after the sick one, for I am waiting for you.

I have set a hundred streams of water flowing from my eyes,
in hope of the seed of love that I would sow in your heart.

It shed my blood and freed me from the grief of love;
I am grateful to your dagger-wielding glance.

I weep, and my aim in this flood of tears
is the seed of affection that I would sow in your heart.

Of your kindness give me leave to come to you, that with a burning heart
I may rain pearls from my eyes at your feet, moment by moment.

Hafez, wine and beauty and the life of a rend are not your station;
yet on the whole you practise them, and I let it pass.

Interpretation of the fal

Someone dear is far from you and you have entrusted them to God; that is the best thing to do. Your heart will not turn away from them, and you would do anything to bring them back. Your tears and loyalty will in the end take root in their heart. Ask them to enquire after you, and be patient until that day.
