Ghazal 97: You are the one who sits like a crown on the head of a country's beauties
You are the one who sits like a crown on the head of a country's beauties;
it is fitting if all heart-stealers pay you tribute.
Your two bold eyes have thrown Khata and Abyssinia into confusion;
to the curl of your tress, Machin and India have paid their tax.
The whiteness of your face is bright as the cheek of day;
the blackness of your dark tress is the deepest darkness.
Your honeyed mouth has given currency to Khizr's water;
your sugar-like lip has taken the market from the candy of Egypt.
From this sickness I shall truly find no healing,
for the heart's pain from you, my soul, does not reach a cure.
Why do you break my soul with your stony heart,
a weak heart that is as delicate as glass?
Your lip is Khizr and your mouth is the water of life;
your stature is a cypress, your waist a hair, your breast like ivory.
Into Hafez's heart has come the desire for a king like you;
would that he were the least speck of dust at your door.
Interpretation of the fal
You have set your heart on someone who stands above the rest and holds a high position; reaching them is not easy. Your heart is tender and their hardness wounds it. Ask them to deal gently with you. Your humility is admirable, but do not make yourself smaller than you are.
