Ghazal 100: Yesterday the old wine seller, may his name be blessed

Yesterday the old wine seller, may his name be blessed,
said: drink wine and put the heart's grief out of mind.

I said: wine throws my name and honour to the wind.
He said: accept the word, and let come what may.

Since profit, loss and capital will all slip from the hand,
be neither sad nor glad over this bargain.

You will have wind in your hand if you set your heart on nothing,
in a place where Solomon's throne goes to the wind.

Hafez, if the counsel of the wise wearies you,
let us cut the story short, and may your life be long.

Interpretation of the fal

Take the advice of someone old and experienced: let go of your heart's grief and stop worrying about your name and what people say. Worldly profit and loss both pass, so do not be elated by gaining or cast down by losing. Do not tie your heart to things that do not last. Accept what comes and take life lightly.
