Ghazal 99: My heart, in longing for the face of Farrokh
My heart, in longing for the face of Farrokh,
is as dishevelled as the hair of Farrokh.
Apart from the dark slave of his tress, there is no one
who has had enjoyment of the face of Farrokh.
A fortunate dark one is he who is always
the confidant and close companion of Farrokh.
The free cypress would tremble like the willow
if it saw the heart-winning stature of Farrokh.
Cupbearer, give wine the colour of the Judas tree
in memory of the sorcerer's narcissus eye of Farrokh.
My body has bent double like a bow
from grief as unbroken as the eyebrow of Farrokh.
It has put the breeze of Tartar musk to shame,
the scent of the amber-perfumed tress of Farrokh.
If everyone's heart leans to some place,
the leaning of my heart is toward Farrokh.
I am the slave of the spirit of anyone who is,
like Hafez, the servant and dark slave of Farrokh.
Interpretation of the fal
Your whole heart and mind are with one person and you want no one else. Their absence has left you unsettled and bowed down, and you envy those close to them. That single-heartedness is a sign of your sincerity. Tell them openly of your attachment: your loyalty will not go unanswered.
