Ghazal 105: If the Sufi drinks wine in measure, may it do him good
If the Sufi drinks wine in measure, may it do him good;
if not, may the thought of this business be forgotten by him.
The one who can give away a single draught of wine,
may his arm be around the beauty he desires.
Our elder said: no error passed over the pen of creation;
blessings on his pure, error-covering sight.
The king of the Turks listens to the talk of the pretenders;
may he feel shame for the wrong of Siyavash's blood.
Though out of pride he spoke no word to me, a dervish,
may my life be the ransom of his sweet, silent pistachio mouth.
My eye has become one of the mirror holders of his down and mole;
may my lip be one of the kiss thieves of his breast and shoulder.
His drunken narcissus eye, caressing and kind to people,
if it drinks the lover's blood by the cup, may it do him good.
Hafez has become famous in the world for being your slave;
may the ring of servitude to your tress be in his ear.
Interpretation of the fal
Keep to moderation in everything: what is pleasant in measure does harm in excess. Be generous and you will gain what you want. Overlook the faults of others, and do not find fault with how things were made. If someone was too proud to speak to you, bear no grudge. Do not listen to those who wish you ill, and stay loyal.
