Ghazal 110: In my old age the love of a young one has come into my head
In my old age the love of a young one has come into my head,
and the secret I had hidden in my heart has fallen out.
By way of the eye the bird of my heart took to the air;
O eye, look into whose snare it has fallen.
Alas that from that musky, black-eyed gazelle,
as in the musk pod, much of my heart's blood has gathered in my liver.
It came from the dust of the passage at the end of your street,
every musk pod that fell into the hand of the dawn breeze.
Since your eyelashes drew a world-conquering sword,
many a slain one, alive in heart, has fallen one upon another.
We have tested it often in this house of retribution:
whoever fell out with the drinkers of dregs was overthrown.
Though the black stone give its life, it will not become a ruby;
what can it do against its nature? It was ill-born.
Hafez, who had the tips of the idols' tresses under his hand,
is a rare adversary indeed, to have this now befall him.
Interpretation of the fal
A sudden, unexpected attachment has come to you at a time when you did not look for it, and your secret is out. The heart cannot be held back, but look carefully at whose snare you have fallen into. Do not pick quarrels with plain, sincere people. And do not expect someone whose nature is unsuitable to change.
