Ghazal 125: A beauty is not one who has fine hair and a slender waist
A beauty is not one who has fine hair and a slender waist;
be the servant of the face of one who has that certain something.
The manner of houri and fairy is graceful, but
beauty and grace are what a certain someone has.
O laughing rose, come to the aid of the spring of my eye,
which in hope of you has a fine running stream.
Who can carry off the ball of beauty from you, when the sun there
is not a rider who has the reins in his hand?
My words pierced the heart once you accepted them;
yes, yes, the speech of love has a mark.
The curve of your eyebrow, in the craft of archery,
has beaten everyone who has a bow.
On the road of love no one has become, for certain, a keeper of the secret;
everyone, according to his thought, has a guess.
Do not boast of miracles to those who sit in the tavern;
every word has its time and every point its place.
The wise bird does not pitch its song tent in a meadow
where every spring has an autumn at its heels.
Tell the pretender not to sell riddles and fine points to Hafez;
our pen too has a tongue and a way of speaking.
Interpretation of the fal
True beauty is not in outward features but in a quality that goes straight to the heart. Do not tie your heart to what is passing and unstable. Your words have been accepted and have had their effect. Every remark has its place and time: do not show off, and be unassuming with people of the heart. Your ability is no less than that of your rivals.
