Ghazal 131: Come, for the Turk of the sky has plundered the table of the fast

Come, for the Turk of the sky has plundered the table of the fast;
the crescent of the festival has signalled for the round of the cup.

The reward of fasting and of an accepted pilgrimage went to the one
who made his visit to the dust of the tavern of love.

Our true station is the corner of the tavern;
may God reward the one who built this house.

What is the price of wine like ruby? The jewel of reason.
Come, for the one who did this trade took the profit.

Prayer in the curve of those eyebrows like a prayer niche
is made by one who has purified himself in his liver's blood.

Alas that the wanton narcissus eye of the city's sheikh today
looked with contempt on the drinkers of dregs.

Look on the friend's face and be grateful to your eyes,
for the experienced one looked with true sight.

Hear the tale of love from Hafez, not from the preacher,
though he worked much artifice into his phrases.

Interpretation of the fal

A time of abstinence and difficulty is over and a day of gladness has arrived. What you do with a clean heart and out of love is worth more than any outward observance. Pay no attention to the contempt of people who judge by appearances. Listen to someone who has walked the road, not to someone who merely speaks well.
