Ghazal 133: The Sufi set his snare and opened the lid of his box of tricks

The Sufi set his snare and opened the lid of his box of tricks;
he began a contest of deceit with the juggling sky.

The play of the wheel will break the egg in his cap,
because he showed off his conjuring before those who know the secret.

Cupbearer, come, for the Sufis' handsome darling
has appeared again and begun to give herself airs.

Where is this minstrel from, who struck up the mode of Iraq
and then turned back by way of Hijaz?

O heart, come, let us take refuge with God
from what the short sleeve and the long hand have done.

Do not play false, for whoever did not play love straight,
love shut the door of meaning in his heart's face.

Tomorrow, when the court of truth appears,
ashamed will be the traveller who acted on pretence.

O partridge of the pleasant strut, where are you going? Stop!
Do not be deceived because the ascetic's cat has said its prayers.

Hafez, do not blame the rends, for before time began
God made us free of the asceticism of hypocrisy.

Interpretation of the fal

Someone with a polished, deceptive exterior is trying to draw you into a trap; do not trust their show of virtue. The trickster will be exposed in the end. Be honest with others yourself and do not play a part, because one day the truth will come out. Stay alert and do not rush ahead.
