Ghazal 136: One cannot put a hand into the ring of that double tress

دست در حلقهٔ آن زلف دوتا نتوان کرد
تکیه بر عهد تو و باد صبا نتوان کرد

آن‌چه سعی است، من اندر طلبت بنمایم
این قدر هست که تغییر قضا نتوان کرد

دامن دوست به صد خون دل افتاد به دست
به فسوسی که کند خصم، رها نتوان کرد

عارضش را به مثل ماه فلک نتوان گفت
نسبت دوست به هر بی سر و پا نتوان کرد

سروبالای من آنگه که درآید به سماع
چه محل جامهٔ جان را که قبا نتوان کرد؟

نظر پاک تواند رخ جانان دیدن
که در آیینه نظر جز به صفا نتوان کرد

مشکل عشق نه در حوصلهٔ دانش ماست
حل‌ این نکته بدین فکر خطا نتوان کرد

غیرتم کشت که محبوب جهانی، لیکن
روز و شب عربده با خلق خدا نتوان کرد

من چه گویم؟ که تو را نازکی طبع لطیف
تا به حدیست که آهسته دعا نتوان کرد

بجز ابروی تو محراب دل حافظ نیست
طاعت غیر تو در مذهب ما نتوان کرد

One cannot put a hand into the ring of that double tress;
one cannot rely on your promise or on the morning breeze.

Whatever effort there is, I will show in seeking you;
this much is true, that destiny cannot be changed.

The friend's hem came to hand at the cost of a hundred heart's bloods;
it cannot be let go because of an enemy's mockery.

Her cheek cannot be likened to the moon in the sky;
the friend cannot be compared to every worthless thing.

When my cypress-tall one comes into the dance,
what is the garment of the soul worth, that it cannot be torn open?

Only a pure gaze can see the face of the beloved,
for into a mirror one cannot look except with clearness.

The difficulty of love is beyond the reach of our knowledge;
this point cannot be solved by such mistaken thought.

Jealousy killed me, that you are the beloved of a whole world, but
day and night one cannot quarrel with God's creatures.

What can I say? The delicacy of your tender nature
is such that one cannot even pray quietly.

Apart from your eyebrow, the heart of Hafez has no prayer niche;
in our creed, obedience to any but you cannot be given.
