Ghazal 161: How can a mind that is sad bring forth fresh verse?

How can a mind that is sad bring forth fresh verse?
We have said one point of this matter, and that is all.

If I win from your ruby lip a ring of protection,
a hundred kingdoms of Solomon will be under my seal.

O heart, one must not be grieved by the taunt of the envious;
perhaps, when you look again, your good lies in this.

Whoever gains no understanding from this fancy-stirring pen,
his picture is unlawful, even if he is the painter of China.

A cup of wine and the heart's blood: each was given to someone;
in the circle of destiny, that is how things stand.

In the matter of rosewater and the rose, the eternal decree was this:
that one should be a beauty of the market and the other sit behind the veil.

It is not that the life of a rend has gone from Hafez's mind,
for this record from the past lasts until the final day.

Interpretation of the fal

Good work does not come from a sad heart, so settle your heart first. Do not be upset by the taunts of the envious: your good may lie in that very thing. Each person's portion was settled beforehand; be content with yours and do not measure yourself against others. What is in your nature stays with you to the end.
