Ghazal 162: The rose has come and is sweet, and nothing is sweeter
The rose has come and is sweet, and nothing is sweeter
than that there be nothing in your hand but the cup.
Seize the time of a glad heart, and understand
that the pearl is not always in the shell.
Count it a gain and drink wine in the rose garden,
for by next week the rose will be gone.
You who have filled the golden cup with ruby,
be generous to the one who has no gold.
Come, O sheikh, and from our wine cellar
drink a wine that is not in the river of paradise.
Wash the pages clean if you are our fellow student,
for the knowledge of love is not in the book.
Listen to me and tie your heart to a beauty
whose loveliness does not depend on ornament.
Grant me, Lord, a wine without a hangover,
one that brings no headache with it.
With my soul I am the slave of Sultan Oveys,
though he gives no thought to his servant.
By his world-adorning crown, the sun itself
is not so fit to wear a diadem.
Only that one finds fault with the verse of Hafez
who has no grace at all in his nature.
Interpretation of the fal
A pleasant but brief opportunity has come; take it, because it will not stay. If you are well off, give to those who have nothing. What you seek is not in books and discussion but in the heart. Give your heart to a beauty that does not depend on adornment. Ask for a happiness that leaves no regret behind it.
