Ghazal 163: The rose without the friend's face is not sweet

The rose without the friend's face is not sweet;
spring without wine is not sweet.

The edge of the meadow and the walk round the garden
without a tulip-cheeked one are not sweet.

The dancing of the cypress and the mood of the rose
without the nightingale's voice are not sweet.

With a sugar-lipped, rose-bodied friend,
to be without kiss and embrace is not sweet.

Every picture that the hand of reason draws,
except the picture of the beloved, is not sweet.

Life is a paltry coin, Hafez;
for scattering as a gift it is not sweet enough.

Interpretation of the fal

No pleasure is complete without the one you love. Everything else is in place, but their absence is felt. Reasoning does not help here: only the thought of them satisfies your heart. Take a step toward seeing them, and count whatever it costs you as small.
