Ghazal 208: When the wounded have the desire and have not the strength

When the wounded have the desire and have not the strength,
if you deal unjustly, that is not what chivalry requires.

We have seen no cruelty from you, and you yourself would not approve
what is not in the creed of the masters of the Path.

Blind is the eye whose brightness is not washed away by the weeping of love;
dark is the heart in which there is no candle of affection.

Seek fortune from the auspicious bird and from its shadow,
for the crow and the kite have no royal feather of fortune.

If I asked help of the Magian elder, do not find fault;
our shaykh said that in the cloister there was no high resolve.

Where there is no purity, the Kaaba and the idol-house are one;
there is no good in a house where there is no chastity.

Hafez, cultivate learning and courtesy, for in the king's assembly
whoever has no courtesy is not fit for company.

Interpretation of the fal

Be kind and fair to those who are weak and need you. Seek help and guidance from generous, fortunate people, not from the mean-spirited. The worth of any place or any act lies in purity of intention, not in its name or appearance. Cultivate learning and good manners, so that you are fit to keep company with the great.
