Ghazal 233: I will not give up the search until my desire is fulfilled

I will not give up the search until my desire is fulfilled:
either the body reaches the beloved, or the soul leaves the body.

Open my grave after I have died, and look:
from the fire within me smoke rises out of the shroud.

Show your face, so that a whole people is dazed and bewildered;
open your lips, so that a cry goes up from man and woman.

The soul is on the lip and there is regret in the heart, that
without taking any pleasure from his lips the soul leaves the body.

From longing for his mouth my soul has been brought to straits;
when does the desire of those with empty hands come from that mouth?

They speak well of him among the company of those who love,
wherever the name of Hafez comes up in the assembly.

Interpretation of the fal

Your resolve is serious and you will not give up until you reach your goal; that very perseverance will bring you a good name. The fire you carry inside cannot be hidden. But what you want is slow and hard to obtain, so prepare yourself for a long road, and endure.
