Ghazal 246: It is the festival, the last of the roses, and the friends are waiting
It is the festival, the last of the roses, and the friends are waiting;
cupbearer, see the new moon in the face of the king and bring wine.
I had taken my heart away from the days of the rose, but
the resolve of the pure who keep the fast accomplished something.
Do not bind your heart to the world, and ask the drunken
about the bounty of the cup and the story of fortunate Jamshid.
I have nothing in hand but the coin of my life; where is the wine?
That too I will scatter for the glance of the cupbearer.
It is a happy, flourishing reign and a generous sovereign;
O Lord, keep him from the evil eye of time.
Drink wine to this servant's verse, for it will give another beauty
to your jewelled cup, this pearl fit for a king.
If the meal before dawn was missed, what harm? There is the morning cup;
those who seek the friend break their fast with wine.
Since your generous pardon covers every fault,
forgive our heart, for it is a coin of low assay.
I fear that on the Day of Gathering they will ride rein to rein,
the rosary of the shaykh and the cloak of the wine-drinking rend.
Hafez, since the fast is gone and the rose is going too,
drink wine, there is no help for it, for the matter has slipped from our hands.
Interpretation of the fal
It is a time of celebration and release, and a chance you had given up on has come back through the blessing of purity and patience. Do not set your heart on the world, but do make use of these short days. If you have missed something, there is another way to make up for it. Trust in God's forgiveness, and do not be hard on yourself or on others.
