Ghazal 267: East wind, if you pass along the bank of the river Aras

East wind, if you pass along the bank of the river Aras,
kiss the earth of that valley and make your breath sweet with musk.

The dwelling of Salma, to which a hundred greetings go from us every moment,
you will find full of the cries of camel drivers and the sound of the bell.

Kiss the litter of the beloved, and then plead and say:
"I am burnt by separation from you, O kind one; come to my aid."

I, who used to call the words of the advisers the sound of the rebec,
have had my ear twisted by separation, and that lesson is enough for me.

Make merry through the night and drink wine, for on the road of love
those who walk by night are on familiar terms with the chief of the watch.

The play of love is no game, O heart; stake your head,
for the ball of love cannot be struck with the stick of mere desire.

The heart willingly gives up the soul to the drunken eye of the friend,
though the sober have never handed their free will to anyone.

The parrots are enjoying their good fortune in the land of sugar,
and the poor fly beats its head with its hands in regret.

If the name of Hafez comes to the tongue of the friend's pen,
from the court of His Majesty the king that is all I ask.

Interpretation of the fal

Your heart is with a person or a place far away, and you have a message for them: send it. You did not listen to advice, and separation has taught you a hard lesson. Love is not a game and gets nowhere on mere desire; one has to stake everything on it. Others are enjoying success while you look on with regret, yet simply being remembered by that person is enough for you.
