Ghazal 289: His cheek, like the moon, is the meeting place of beauty and grace

His cheek, like the moon, is the meeting place of beauty and grace,
but he has no love or faithfulness: O God, give them to him.

My stealer of hearts is a beauty and a child, and one day in play
he will kill me miserably, and by the Law there will be no sin on him.

It is better for me to guard my heart well from him,
for he has seen neither bad nor good, and will not keep it safe.

The scent of milk still comes from his lip, which is like sugar,
though blood drips from the ways of his black eye.

I have a nimble, sweet idol of fourteen years,
whom the moon of the fourteenth night serves, heart and soul, with a ring in its ear.

In pursuit of that newly opened rose, O Lord, our heart,
where has it gone, that we have not seen it all this while?

If my friend who keeps my heart goes on breaking the centre like this,
the king will soon take him into his own bodyguard.

I would spend my life in thanksgiving if that single pearl
had the shell of Hafez's breast for its resting place.

Interpretation of the fal

You have set your heart on someone who is beautiful but raw and inexperienced, and who does not yet know the value of love and loyalty. Do not expect maturity from them, and guard your heart with care. Perhaps they will learn with time: pray for them. If they come to find peace and rest with you, your greatest wish will have been granted.
