Ghazal 290: My heart has bolted, and I, a poor dervish, do not know
My heart has bolted, and I, a poor dervish, do not know
what has become of that bewildered quarry.
I tremble like the willow for my own faith,
for my heart is in the hands of one with bow-shaped brows and an infidel's creed.
It is cooking up the fancy of holding the sea: alas!
What notions there are in the head of this drop that thinks the impossible!
I glory in that bold eyelash that kills all peace,
at the point of whose sting the water of sweetness breaks in waves.
A thousand drops of blood would run from the sleeves of the physicians
if they laid a hand on my wounded heart to examine it.
I go to the street of the tavern weeping, with my head hanging,
for I am ashamed of what I have to show for myself.
Neither the life of Khizr remains, nor the kingdom of Alexander;
do not quarrel over this base world, dervish.
Not every beggar's hand reaches that waist, Hafez;
get hold of a treasury greater than the treasure of Korah.
Interpretation of the fal
You have lost your heart and do not know where it will lead; you are worried about your convictions and your peace of mind. You have a wish that is far greater than your present means: to reach it, you must gather more resources and more merit. Do not quarrel with anyone over the world's wealth and rank, for none of it lasts.
