Ghazal 292: I swear by the pomp, the rank and the glory of Shah Shuja
I swear by the pomp, the rank and the glory of Shah Shuja
that I have no quarrel with anyone over wealth or rank.
Home-made wine is enough for me; bring the wine of the Magians.
The companion of the cup has arrived: friend, farewell to repentance.
For God's sake, wash my cloak clean with wine,
for I catch no scent of good from this state of things.
See how he goes dancing to the wail of the harp,
the one who would not give leave even to listen to music.
Cast a glance upon lovers, in thanks for this blessing,
that I am an obedient slave and you a king who is obeyed.
We are thirsty for the bounty of a draught from your cup, but
we do not presume, and we give no trouble.
May God never part the brow and face of Hafez
from the dust of the court of the greatness of Shah Shuja.
Interpretation of the fal
You have no quarrel with anyone over wealth and position and are content with little: that disposition keeps you at ease. Those who used to be severe have softened too, and the times are more favourable. You hope for kindness from a great person to whom you are loyal, yet you keep your manners and do not intrude. That same loyalty and modesty will be noticed.
