Ghazal 294: In faithfulness to your love I am famous among the fair, like the candle

In faithfulness to your love I am famous among the fair, like the candle;
I sit up at night in the street of the reckless and the rends, like the candle.

Day and night no sleep comes to my grief-worshipping eye,
so much do I weep in the sickness of separation from you, like the candle.

The thread of my patience has been cut by the scissors of grief for you,
and still I burn in the fire of your love, like the candle.

If the bay steed of my rose-red tears had not run so hot,
when would my hidden secret have been brought to light in the world, like the candle?

Between water and fire it is still warmly taken up with you,
this wretched, wasted, tear-raining heart of mine, like the candle.

In the night of separation send me the moth of a meeting,
or else, from the pain of you, I will set a whole world on fire, like the candle.

Without your world-adorning beauty my day is as the night;
with all the fullness of love for you I am in the very act of waning, like the candle.

The mountain of my patience has gone soft as wax in the hand of grief for you,
ever since I have been melting in the water and fire of your love, like the candle.

Like the morning, I have one breath left for the sight of you;
show your face, stealer of hearts, so that I may give up my life, like the candle.

Raise my head high one night with union with you, O delicate one,
so that my hall may be lit by the sight of you, like the candle.

Hafez has taken the fire of your love to his head in a wondrous way;
when shall I put out the fire of the heart with the water of the eye, like the candle?

Interpretation of the fal

You are steadfast and loyal in your love, and that loyalty is well known, but distance is wearing you away and has taken your sleep. Your patience has run out and your tears have given your secret away. Ask the other person to send some sign of a meeting, for you have little endurance left. One meeting will light up your home and your heart: work towards it.
