Ghazal 298: A place of safety, wine without blemish and a kind friend

مقام امن و می بی‌غش و رفیق شفیق
گرت مدام میسر شود، زهی توفیق

جهان و کار جهان جمله هیچ بر هیچ است
هزار بار من این نکته کرده‌ام تحقیق

دریغ و درد که تا این زمان ندانستم
که کیمیای سعادت، رفیق بود، رفیق

به مأمنی رو و فرصت شمر غنیمت وقت
که در کمینگه عمرند قاطعان طریق

بیا که توبه ز لعل نگار و خندهٔ جام
حکایتی‌ست که عقلش نمی‌کند تصدیق

اگر چه موی میانت به چون منی نرسد
خوش است خاطرم از فکر این خیال دقیق

حلاوتی که تو را در چه زنخدان است
به کنه آن نرسد صد‌ هزار فکر عمیق

اگر به رنگ عقیقی شد اشک من، چه عجب؟
که مهر خاتم لعل تو هست همچو عقیق

به خنده گفت که «حافظ! غلام طبع توام»
ببین که تا به چه حدم همی کند تحمیق

A place of safety, wine without blemish and a kind friend:
if these are always within your reach, what good fortune!

The world and the business of the world are all nothing upon nothing;
a thousand times I have put this point to the proof.

Alas and sorrow, that until this moment I did not know
that the elixir of happiness was the friend, the friend.

Go to a place of safety and count the opportunity of the hour a prize,
for the highwaymen lie in ambush for life.

Come, for repentance from the ruby lip of the beloved and the laughter of the cup
is a story that reason does not confirm.

Although your waist, fine as a hair, is not for one such as me,
my mind is pleased by the thought of that subtle fancy.

The sweetness that lies in the dimple of your chin,
a hundred thousand deep thoughts do not reach its depth.

If my tears have turned the colour of carnelian, what wonder?
For the seal of your ruby signet is like carnelian.

Laughing, he said: "Hafez, I am the slave of your genius."
See to what lengths he goes to make a fool of me.
