Ghazal 303: I have caught the breath of affection and seen the lightning of union
I have caught the breath of affection and seen the lightning of union;
come, for I would die for your scent, O breeze of the north.
O driver of the beloved's camels, halt and set down the litter,
for in my longing for that beauty I have no seemly patience left.
The story of the night of separation is better left untold,
in thanks that the day of union has thrown off its veil.
Come, for we have drawn the rose-strewn curtain of the seven chambers of the eye
to be painted in the workshop of imagination.
Since the friend is minded to make peace and asks to be excused,
one can overlook the cruelty of the rival in every case.
In my straitened heart there is nothing but the thought of your mouth;
may no one be like me, pursuing an impossible fancy.
Hafez, the stranger, has been slain by love of you; and yet
pass by our dust, for our blood is lawful to you.
Interpretation of the fal
Signs of affection and of a meeting have appeared, and the time of separation is drawing to a close: say no more about past bitterness. The one you love is ready to make peace and is asking pardon: accept it, and overlook the harm others have done as well. Only take care not to give your heart to an impossible fancy.
