Ghazal 306: If I am granted the chance of arriving in your street

اگر به کوی تو باشد مرا مجال وصول
رسد، به دولت وصل تو، کار من به اصول

قرار برده ز من آن دو نرگس رعنا
فراغ برده ز من آن دو جادو‌ی مکحول

چو بر در تو من بینوا‌ی بی زر و زور
به هیچ باب ندارم ره خروج و دخول

کجا روم چه کنم چاره از کجا جویم‌؟
که گشته‌ام ز غم و جور روزگار ملول

من شکستهٔ بدحال زندگی یابم
در آن زمان که به تیغ غمت شوم مقتول

خراب‌تر ز دل من غم تو جای نیافت
که ساخت در دل تنگم قرار‌گاه نزول

دل از جواهر مهر‌ت چو صیقلی دارد
بود ز زنگ حوادث هر آینه مصقول

چه جرم کرده‌ام؟ ای جان و دل، به حضرت تو
که طاعت من بیدل نمی‌شود مقبول

به درد عشق بساز و خموش کن حافظ
رموز عشق مکن فاش پیش اهل عقول

If I am granted the chance of arriving in your street,
through the fortune of union with you my affairs will be set in order.

Those two graceful narcissi have carried off my rest;
those two kohl-darkened sorcerers have carried off my peace.

Since at your door I, destitute, without gold and without strength,
have no way at all of coming in or going out,

Where am I to go, what am I to do, where am I to look for a remedy?
For I have grown weary of grief and of the tyranny of the times.

I, broken and in a wretched state, will find life
at the moment when I am slain by the sword of grief for you.

Grief for you found no place more ruined than my heart,
and so it made its halting place in my straitened heart.

Since the heart has a polisher in the jewels of love for you,
it will assuredly be burnished clean of the rust of events.

What offence have I committed, O soul and heart, before your presence,
that the devotion of me, the heart-lost, is not accepted?

Make do with the pain of love and be silent, Hafez;
do not disclose the secrets of love before the people of reason.
