Ghazal 311: I am in love with the face of a fair youth newly come to bloom
I am in love with the face of a fair youth newly come to bloom,
and in my prayers I have asked God for the fortune of this grief.
I am a lover, a rend, and one who plays with glances, and I say it openly,
so that you may know I am adorned with so many talents.
I am ashamed of my own stained cloak,
on which I have neatly sewn patches with a hundred tricks.
Burn well in grief for him, O candle, for here am I too,
with my belt fastened, risen up for this same work.
With such bewilderment, the profit of my work has slipped away;
I have added to my grief what I have taken from heart and soul.
Like Hafez I will go to the tavern with my garment torn open;
perhaps that young stealer of hearts will take me in his arms.
Interpretation of the fal
You have set your heart on a new love, and you yourself had asked God for it. Be honest with yourself and with others and give up keeping up appearances: you are ashamed of them, and rightly so. This attachment both takes from you and gives to you. You have made yourself ready: go forward openly, and perhaps you will be accepted.
