Ghazal 31: That Night of Power the recluses speak of is tonight

آن شب قدری که گویند اهل خلوت امشب است
یا رب این تأثیر دولت در کدامین کوکب است؟

تا به گیسوی تو دست ناسزایان کم رسد
هر دلی از حلقه‌ای در ذکر یارب یارب است

کشته چاه زنخدان توام کز هر طرف
صد هزارش گردن جان زیر طوق غبغب است

شهسوار من که مه آیینه دار روی اوست
تاج خورشید بلندش خاک نعل مرکب است

عکس خوی بر عارضش بین کآفتاب گرم رو
در هوای آن عرق تا هست هر روزش تب است

من نخواهم کرد ترک لعل یار و جام می
زاهدان معذور داریدم که اینم مذهب است

اندر آن ساعت که بر پشت صبا بندند زین
با سلیمان چون برانم من که مورم مرکب است

آن که ناوک بر دل من زیر چشمی می‌زند
قوت جان حافظش در خندهٔ زیر لب است

آب حیوانش ز منقار بلاغت می‌چکد
زاغ کلک من بنامیزد چه عالی مشرب است

That Night of Power the recluses speak of is tonight;
Lord, in which star lies this working of fortune?

So that the hands of the unworthy may seldom reach your hair,
every heart in its ring is calling: O Lord, O Lord.

I am slain by the well of your chin, for on every side
a hundred thousand necks of souls lie under the collar of your double chin.

My royal rider, whose face the moon holds a mirror to,
the crown of the lofty sun is dust under his horse's shoe.

See the gleam of sweat on his cheek, for the hot-paced sun,
longing for that sweat, has a fever every day it exists.

I will not give up the friend's ruby lip and the cup of wine;
ascetics, hold me excused, for this is my creed.

In that hour when they bind the saddle on the back of the wind,
how shall I ride with Solomon, I whose mount is an ant?

The one who shoots an arrow at my heart from under his eye,
the food of Hafez's soul lies in his hidden smile.

The water of life drips from its beak of eloquence;
the crow of my pen, God's name upon it, how noble its drinking place!
