Ghazal 32: When God shaped the form of your heart-opening eyebrow

When God shaped the form of your heart-opening eyebrow,
he tied the opening of my affairs to your coquetries.

Time seated me and the cypress of the meadow in the dust of the road
when it tied the fine linen of your narcissus-coloured robe.

It untied a hundred knots from our affairs and the rosebud's heart,
when the rose-scented breeze set its heart on desire for you.

The turning of the wheel made me content with your bondage,
but what use, since it tied the thread's end to your consent?

Do not tie a knot, like the musk pod, on my poor heart,
for it made its covenant with the knot-loosing tip of your tress.

You were yourself another kind of union, O breeze of union;
see the mistake, that the heart tied its hope to your faithfulness.

I said: because of your cruelty I will leave the city.
Laughing she said: go, Hafez; who has tied your feet?

Interpretation of the fal

The solution to your problem depends on another person's goodwill, and their unreliability has hurt you. The knot will loosen, but do not hang too much hope on their promises. If you want to leave, nobody is stopping you; it is your own heart that holds you. Decide clearly whether you are staying or going.
