Ghazal 340: I, who from the fire of my heart am seething like the jar of wine

من که از آتش دل چون خم می در جوشم
مهر بر لب زده، خون می‌خورم و خاموشم

قصد جان است طمع در لب جانان کردن
تو مرا بین که در این کار به جان می‌کوشم

من کی آزاد شوم از غم دل؟ چون هر دم
هندوی زلف بتی حلقه کند در گوشم

حاش لله که نیم معتقد طاعت خویش
این قدر هست که گه گه قدحی می‌نوشم

هست امیدم که علیرغم عدو روز جزا
فیض عفوش ننهد بار گنه بر دوشم

پدرم روضهٔ رضوان به دو گندم بفروخت
من چرا ملک جهان را به جوی نفروشم؟!

خرقه‌پوشی من از غایت دین‌داری نیست
پرده‌ای بر سر صد عیب نهان می‌پوشم

من که خواهم که ننوشم به جز از راوق خم
چه کنم گر سخن پیر مغان ننیوشم؟

گر از این دست زند مطرب مجلس ره عشق
شعر حافظ ببرد وقت سماع از هوشم

I, who from the fire of my heart am seething like the jar of wine,
with a seal upon my lips drink blood and keep silent.

To set one's hopes on the lip of the beloved is an attempt on one's own life;
look at me, who strive in this with all my soul.

When shall I ever be free of the grief of the heart, when every moment
the dark tress of some idol puts its ring in my ear?

God forbid that I should put any faith in my own devotions;
there is only this, that now and then I drink a cup.

My hope is that, in spite of the enemy, on the Day of Reckoning
the bounty of His pardon will not lay the load of sin on my shoulders.

My father sold the garden of paradise for two grains of wheat;
why should I not sell the kingdom of this world for a single barleycorn?

My wearing of the cloak does not come from great devoutness;
I am drawing a veil over a hundred hidden faults.

I, who wish to drink nothing but the strained wine of the jar,
what am I to do if I do not heed the word of the Magian elder?

If the minstrel of the gathering plays the mode of love in this manner,
the verse of Hafez will carry away my senses in the hour of the dance.
