Ghazal 364: We, the carefree and drunken who have lost our hearts

We, the carefree and drunken who have lost our hearts,
are the confidants of love and the companions of the cup of wine.

Many a bow of blame has been drawn against us
ever since we untied our affairs by the eyebrow of the beloved.

O rose, it was only last night that you felt the brand of the morning cup;
we are that anemone which was born with the brand.

If the Magian elder has been vexed by our repentance,
tell him to clear the wine, for we stand here to make our excuses.

The matter depends on you: some help, O guide of the road,
for we admit the truth, and we have fallen from the way.

Do not look, as with the tulip, at the wine and the cup in the midst of it;
look at this brand that we have laid upon our bleeding heart.

You said: "Hafez, what is all this colour and fancy?"
Do not misread the picture, for we are the same plain tablet as before.

Interpretation of the fal

You have followed the way of your heart and have heard a great deal of blame for it, but this love has been with you from the start and is nothing new. If you have strayed from the path, admit it and ask the guide for help: your apology will be accepted. Others see only your outward appearance, not the brand you carry in your heart. For all the colours, inside you have the same first simplicity.
