Ghazal 365: It is a lifetime since we set our face towards the road of grief for you

It is a lifetime since we set our face towards the road of grief for you,
and put the show and hypocrisy of the people to one side.

The arch and portico of the college, and all the talk of learning,
we have laid down on the road of the cup and the moon-faced cupbearer.

We have entrusted our soul to those two sorcerer narcissi,
and we have set our heart on those two dark hyacinths.

A lifetime has gone by in which, in hope of a single sign,
we have kept an eye fixed on those two corners of your eyebrow.

We did not take the kingdom of well-being by means of an army;
we did not set up the throne of sovereignty by strength of arm.

Let us see what game the magic of the friend's eye will play, for once again
we have laid our foundations on a sorcerer's glance.

Without his unruly tress, in weariness we have laid our passion-struck head
upon our knee, like the violet.

In the corner of hope, like those who watch for the new moon,
we have fixed the eye of our seeking on that curve of the eyebrow.

You said: "O Hafez, where is your bewildered heart?"
We have placed it in the rings of that curling tress.

Interpretation of the fal

For years you have set everything aside for this love: reputation, study and pretence. For a lifetime you have kept your eyes fixed in hope of one sign from that person. The peace you have was not won by force but rose from the heart. Now again you have built your affairs on a single glance from them: see what comes of it. Stay in the corner of hope and watch for a sign.
